Our Testing Methodology — How Bureau Expert Evaluates Ergonomic Equipment

Transparency is the foundation of our credibility. Here's exactly how we work.

Our Core Principle: Independence

Bureau Expert receives no payment from brands for its reviews. No free products, no unidentified sponsored articles, no disguised "editorial partnerships".

Our only source of income is the Amazon Associates programme — commissions on purchases made through our links. These commissions are identical regardless of the product recommended, and never influence our scores or rankings.

If a product is bad, we say so.

Our Ethics Charter

We commit to the following principles:

  • No direct payment from manufacturers or retailers for writing a review
  • No free products in exchange for editorial coverage. We buy every product we test with our own funds
  • No promise of a positive review — we never guarantee a minimum score before testing
  • Full disclosure of any potential conflict of interest, even indirect
  • Rapid correction if an error is identified in a published test
  • Strict separation between the editorial team and any commercial considerations

How Long We Test

Product typeMinimum durationTypical duration
Office chair2 weeks3-4 weeks
Sit-stand desk3 weeks4-6 weeks
Ergonomic accessory1 week2 weeks

We never publish a review based on "a few hours of hands-on time". Real problems (progressive discomfort, mechanical noises, degrading support) don't appear until several weeks of daily use.

Why a Minimum Duration?

Ergonomics is a question of time. A chair can feel comfortable in the first few days, then reveal unbearable pressure points after two weeks. A sit-stand desk can develop creaks or growing instability over time. By imposing a minimum test duration, we catch these late-onset defects that express tests completely miss.

Every product is tested in real remote-working conditions: 6 to 9-hour days, alternating between sitting and standing positions (for desks), and use on different floor types (hardwood, tile, carpet).

Our Evaluation Criteria

Ergonomic chairs

Lumbar support (25%) — Quality of support for the natural lumbar curve, adjustability, adaptability.

We evaluate lumbar support in prolonged seated positions (6h+). Good lumbar support should fill the space between the chair and your lower back without creating excessive pressure. We test the quality of the lumbar cushion, its ability to adapt to different body shapes, and its durability after several weeks of intensive use. Chairs with lumbar support adjustable in height and depth consistently score higher.

Adjustability (20%) — Number, precision and real usefulness of adjustment points (height, depth, armrests, recline, headrest).

We count every adjustment point and assess its relevance. A chair with 12 adjustments, half of which are useless, doesn't beat a chair with 6 perfectly calibrated ones. We check ease of use: adjustments must be reachable while seated, without excessive effort. 4D armrests (height, depth, width, rotation) are a significant plus if they move smoothly.

Long-duration comfort (25%) — Assessment after 6h+ of continuous use. Pressure on the sit bones, seat heat, back fatigue.

Comfort is measured objectively: after a full day of work, we assess felt fatigue, any sore spots, and whether extra breaks were needed. We use pressure cushions to map weight distribution on the seat. A good chair distributes the load evenly without concentrating pressure on the sit bones.

Build quality (15%) — Materials, finishes, mechanical stability, manufacturer's warranty.

We examine the welds, stitching, quality of fabrics or mesh, and the robustness of the base and castors. A well-built product should last at least 5 years of daily use. We check the manufacturer's warranty — brands offering 5 years or more demonstrate confidence in their products.

Value for money (15%) — Performance relative to price over a 5-year amortisation period.

A £200 chair that lasts 3 years works out more expensive than a £400 chair that lasts 10. We calculate the annual amortised cost, accounting for estimated durability, warranty and the availability of spare parts.

Sit-stand desks

Stability (25%) — Tested with a standard load (20 kg) and the declared maximum load. Residual wobble measured after 2 seconds.

We place a screen on the desk and check stability in both the high and low positions. The wobble test consists of tapping the surface lightly and measuring how long the screen takes to become perfectly still. A quality desk stabilises in under 2 seconds. We also test stability during the motorised transition.

Motor (20%) — Rise/descent speed, measured noise level (dB), column synchronisation.

We time the transition with a stopwatch, measure the noise level with a sound meter at 50 cm, and check that both columns stay synchronised. A good motor descends quietly (under 50 dB) and quickly (under 15 seconds for the full range).

Height range (15%) — Actual minimum and maximum heights vs claimed.

We measure the real heights with a laser measure and compare them to the manufacturer's specifications. Some manufacturers fudge the figures. The height range must cover users from 155 cm to 195 cm at minimum.

Ease of use (20%) — Control interface, precision of presets, ease of assembly.

Assembly is timed. An installation that exceeds 45 minutes loses points. The control panel must be intuitive, and presets precise (within 1 cm) and repeatable.

Value for money (20%) — Performance relative to price over a 7-year amortisation period.

Sit-stand desks amortise over a longer period than chairs. A £350 desk that lasts 7 years represents a monthly cost of £4 — negligible compared to the health benefits.

Our Scoring System

Scores from 1 to 10 are assigned per criterion, then aggregated according to the weights above. The overall score is rounded to one decimal place.

Scoring Process

  1. Each tester assigns an independent score per criterion on a standardised grid
  2. Scores are compared and discussed as a team to identify appraisal differences
  3. A consensus is reached on each final score
  4. The overall score is calculated automatically according to the published weights
  5. No manual modification of the overall score is allowed

How to read our scores:

  • 9.0-10: Exceptional — reference of its category
  • 8.0-8.9: Very good — unreservedly recommended in its range
  • 7.0-7.9: Good — a few compromises, good value for money
  • 6.0-6.9: Acceptable — notable limitations, but OK
  • 6.0: Not recommended — significant problems

Our Team and Equipment

The team

Bureau Expert is made up of testers specialising in office ergonomics, with varied profiles to cover different body shapes and working habits:

  • Regular remote workers (4+ days a week) who use the products daily
  • Tall (6'1"+) and shorter (5'3"-) profiles to test compatibility across all sizes
  • A former office fit-out professional who brings technical expertise on materials and mechanics

Every product is tested by at least 2 different people to limit individual bias.

Test equipment

We use the following equipment for objective measurements:

  • Digital sound meter to measure motor noise (accuracy ±1.5 dB)
  • Laser measure to verify actual heights (accuracy ±1.5 mm)
  • Pressure cushion to map weight distribution on seats
  • Precision scale to check the real weight of products
  • Stopwatch for transition speed tests
  • Dynamometer to assess the force required on manual adjustments

Updating Our Tests

Products evolve — new versions, defect fixes, supplier changes. We revisit our tests when:

  • A major new version is released
  • We receive significant user feedback contradicting our assessment
  • The price changes enough to alter the value-for-money ratio
  • A safety defect is reported

The date of the last update is visible at the top of every article.

Correction Policy

If a reader reports a factual error in one of our tests, we commit to:

  1. Verify the information within 48 hours
  2. Correct the article if the error is confirmed
  3. Add a correction note at the bottom of the article with the date and nature of the change
  4. Never remove a negative review under pressure from a brand

What We Don't Do

  • 30-minute tests presented as full reviews
  • Inflated scores for the most expensive products (the affiliate ones)
  • Rankings based on Amazon commission (it's identical for all)
  • Brand press releases disguised as "reviews"
  • Comparisons without having tested every product

How We Choose Products to Test

Our selection rests on three main criteria:

  1. Audience demand — we analyse the most frequent searches on our site and the questions asked in the comments to identify the products our readers actually care about.

  2. Significant new releases — a product introducing real innovation (new type of lumbar support, silent motor, recycled materials) deserves a test even if it isn't popular yet.

  3. Community feedback — we monitor remote-working communities (Reddit r/homeoffice, dedicated forums) to spot products generating discussion.

We decline roughly 80% of the test requests we receive from brands. Only products meeting at least one of the three criteria above are selected.

How We Manage Conflicts of Interest

Even though our business model relies on Amazon commissions, we take concrete steps to avoid any conflict of interest:

  • Testers don't know the price of products during evaluation — they score purely on their user experience
  • Scores are assigned before the team looks at price or commission data
  • A poorly scored product stays poorly scored, even if it's a best-seller generating lots of clicks
  • We never delete a negative test under pressure from a brand
  • Reader comments are published without prior moderation (except spam or abusive content)

Every Amazon link on our site is an affiliate link. If you buy through that link, we receive a commission (generally between 1% and 5% of the price). This commission doesn't change the price you pay. We'd rather be transparent about this than hide it in legal notices nobody reads.

Our Quality Commitment

Bureau Expert is committed to maintaining a high quality standard across all its content:

  • Every test is reviewed by at least one other team member before publication
  • Technical data (weight, dimensions, noise levels) is verified by independent measurement
  • Displayed prices are checked at publication time and updated regularly
  • Affiliate links are tested monthly to ensure they point to the right product

If you spot an error in one of our articles, please report it. We'll correct it within 48 working hours.
