Our Testing Methodology — How Bureau Expert Evaluates Ergonomic Equipment

Transparency is the foundation of our credibility. Here is exactly how we work.

Our Core Principle: Independence

Bureau Expert does not receive any payment from brands for our reviews. No free products, no undisclosed sponsored posts, no disguised "editorial partnerships."

Our only revenue source is the Amazon Associates program — commissions on purchases made through our links. These commissions are identical regardless of which product we recommend, and in no way influence our ratings or rankings.

If a product is bad, we say so.

Our Ethical Charter

We commit to the following principles:

  • No direct compensation from manufacturers or distributors for writing a review
  • No free products in exchange for editorial coverage. We purchase every tested product with our own funds
  • No advance guarantee of a positive review — we never promise a minimum score before testing
  • Full disclosure of any potential conflict of interest, even indirect
  • Rapid correction if an error is identified in a published test
  • Strict separation between the editorial team and any commercial considerations

Test Duration

Product TypeMinimum DurationTypical Duration
Office chair2 weeks3-4 weeks
Standing desk3 weeks4-6 weeks
Ergonomic accessory1 week2 weeks

We do not publish reviews based on "a few hours of hands-on time." Real problems (progressive discomfort, mechanical noises, support degradation) do not appear until several weeks of daily use.

Why a Minimum Duration?

Ergonomics is a matter of time. A chair may feel comfortable for the first few days then reveal unbearable pressure points after two weeks. A standing desk can develop squeaking or increasing instability over time. By imposing a minimum test duration, we capture these late-emerging defects that express tests completely miss.

Each product is tested under real remote work conditions: 6 to 9 hour days, alternating between sitting and standing positions (for desks), use on different floor types (hardwood, tile, carpet).

Our Evaluation Criteria

Ergonomic Chairs

Lumbar Support (25%) — Quality of maintaining the natural lumbar curve, adjustability, adaptability.

We evaluate lumbar support during prolonged sitting (6h+). Good lumbar support must fill the space between the chair and your lower back without creating excessive pressure. We test the quality of the lumbar cushion, its ability to adapt to different body types, and its durability after several weeks of intensive use. Chairs with lumbar support adjustable in both height and depth consistently receive better scores.

Adjustability (20%) — Number, precision, and real-world usefulness of adjustment points (height, depth, armrests, recline, headrest).

We count each adjustment point and evaluate its relevance. A chair with 12 adjustments, half of which are useless, doesn't beat a chair with 6 perfectly calibrated adjustments. We verify ease of manipulation: adjustments should be accessible while seated, without excessive effort. 4D armrests (height, depth, width, rotation) are a significant plus if they're smooth.

Long-Term Comfort (25%) — Evaluation after 6+ hours of continuous use. Pressure on sit bones, seat heat, back fatigue.

Comfort is measured objectively: after a full workday, we evaluate perceived fatigue, any painful points, and the necessity (or not) of taking extra breaks. We use pressure cushions to map weight distribution on the seat. A good chair distributes load evenly without concentrating pressure on the sit bones.

Build Quality (15%) — Materials, finishes, mechanical stability, manufacturer warranty.

We examine welds, stitching, fabric or mesh quality, base and caster robustness. A well-built product should last at least 5 years in daily use. We verify the manufacturer warranty — brands offering 5 years or more demonstrate confidence in their products.

Value for Money (15%) — Performance relative to price over 5 years of amortization.

A $200 chair that lasts 3 years costs more than a $400 chair that lasts 10 years. We calculate the annual amortization cost factoring in estimated durability, warranty, and spare parts availability.

Standing Desks

Stability (25%) — Tested with standard load (20 kg) and declared maximum load. Measurement of residual wobble after 2 seconds.

We place a monitor on the desk and check stability in both high and low positions. The wobble test consists of lightly striking the desktop and measuring the time needed for the screen to become perfectly stable again. A quality desk stabilizes in under 2 seconds. We also test stability during motorized transition.

Motor (20%) — Raise/lower speed, measured noise level (dB), leg synchronization.

We measure transition speed with a stopwatch, noise level with a sound level meter at 50 cm, and verify synchronization of both columns. A good motor operates quietly (under 50 dB) and quickly (less than 15 seconds for the full range).

Height Range (15%) — Effective minimum and maximum heights vs. declared specs.

We measure actual heights with a laser measure and compare them to manufacturer specifications. Some manufacturers fudge the numbers. The height range must cover users from 155cm to 195cm minimum.

Ease of Use (20%) — Control interface, preset accuracy, assembly difficulty.

Assembly is timed. An installation exceeding 45 minutes loses points. The control panel must be intuitive, presets precise (to within 1 cm) and reproducible.

Value for Money (20%) — Performance relative to price over 7 years of amortization.

Standing desks amortize over a longer period than chairs. A $350 desk that lasts 7 years represents a monthly cost of about $4 — negligible compared to the health benefits.

Our Scoring System

Scores from 1 to 10 are assigned by criterion then aggregated according to the weightings above. The overall score is rounded to one decimal place.

Scoring Process

  1. Each tester assigns an independent score per criterion on a standardized grid
  2. Scores are compared and discussed as a team to identify appreciation gaps
  3. Consensus is reached on each final score
  4. The overall score is calculated automatically according to published weightings
  5. No manual modification of the overall score is permitted

Reading guide:

  • 9.0-10: Exceptional — category benchmark
  • 8.0-8.9: Very good — recommended without reservation in its range
  • 7.0-7.9: Good — some compromises, good value for money
  • 6.0-6.9: Acceptable — notable limitations, but acceptable
  • <6.0: Not recommended — significant problems

Our Team and Tools

The Team

Bureau Expert consists of testers specializing in desk ergonomics, with varied profiles to cover different body types and work habits:

  • Regular remote workers (4+ days per week) who use the products daily
  • Tall (6'1"+) and short (5'3"-) profiles to test compatibility with all sizes
  • A former office furniture professional who brings technical expertise on materials and mechanics

Each product is tested by at least 2 different people to limit individual bias.

Testing Equipment

We use the following equipment for objective measurements:

  • Digital sound level meter to measure motor noise (±1.5 dB accuracy)
  • Laser measure to verify actual heights (±1.5 mm accuracy)
  • Pressure cushion to map weight distribution on seats
  • Precision scale to verify actual product weight
  • Stopwatch for transition speed tests
  • Dynamometer to evaluate force required for manual adjustments

Test Updates

Products evolve — new versions, defect fixes, supplier changes. We revisit our tests when:

  • A major new version is released
  • We receive significant user feedback contradicting our evaluation
  • The price changes enough to alter value for money
  • A safety defect is reported

The last update date is visible at the top of each article.

Correction Policy

If a reader reports a factual error in one of our tests, we commit to:

  1. Verifying the information within 48 hours
  2. Correcting the article if the error is confirmed
  3. Adding a correction note at the bottom of the article with the date and nature of the change
  4. Never deleting a negative review under brand pressure

What We Do Not Do

  • 30-minute tests presented as full reviews
  • Inflated scores for the most expensive products (affiliates)
  • Rankings based on Amazon commission (it is identical for all)
  • Brand press releases disguised as "reviews"
  • Comparisons without having tested all the products

How We Choose Products to Test

Our selection is based on three main criteria:

  1. Our audience's demand — we analyze the most frequent searches on our site and questions asked in comments to identify products that genuinely interest our readers.

  2. Significant new releases — a product introducing genuine innovation (new type of lumbar support, silent motor, recycled materials) deserves a test, even if it's not yet popular.

  3. Community feedback — we monitor remote work forums and communities to identify products generating discussions.

We refuse approximately 80% of test requests received from brands. Only products meeting at least one of the three criteria above are selected.

How We Manage Conflicts of Interest

Even though our business model relies on Amazon commissions, we take concrete measures to prevent any conflict of interest:

  • Testers do not know product prices during evaluation — they score solely based on user experience
  • Scores are assigned before the team consults pricing or commission data
  • A poorly rated product stays poorly rated, even if it's a bestseller generating lots of clicks
  • We never delete a negative test under brand pressure
  • Reader comments are published without pre-moderation (except spam or abusive language)

Every link to Amazon on our site is an affiliate link. If you purchase through that link, we receive a commission (generally between 1% and 5% of the price). This commission doesn't change the price you pay. We prefer being transparent about this rather than hiding it in legal notices nobody reads.

Our Quality Commitment

Bureau Expert commits to maintaining a high quality level across all content:

  • Every test is reviewed by at least one other team member before publication
  • Technical data (weight, dimensions, noise levels) are verified by independent measurement
  • Displayed prices are verified at time of publication and updated regularly
  • Affiliate links are tested monthly to ensure they point to the correct product

If you notice an error in one of our articles, don't hesitate to report it. We'll correct it within 48 business hours.
