Back Pain at the Office: Causes, Solutions and Prevention
According to INSERM (French National Institute of Health and Medical Research), 70% of French people suffer from work-related back pain. It's the leading cause of sick leave in France. Yet the vast majority of this pain is avoidable — or at least reducible — with the right adjustments.
This guide explains why you're in pain, and exactly what to do to feel better.
Why Sitting Hurts
Contrary to intuition, sitting is not a resting position for the back. When sitting, pressure on the lumbar intervertebral discs is 40% higher than when standing. Add poor posture, and pressure rises to 150-185% compared to upright standing.
The most common problems:
1. Lumbar slumping — When you slump in your chair, the natural curve of your lower back (lordosis) reverses. Discs are compressed backward, creating pressure on nerves.
2. Forward head posture — For every centimeter your head moves forward from its natural axis, the effective weight on your neck increases by ~2.7 kg. A head 5 cm forward exerts the equivalent of 20+ kg on the cervical vertebrae.
3. Immobility — Prolonged sitting reduces blood circulation in the discs (which have no direct blood vessels) and gradually atrophies back muscles.
Solutions by Impact
1. Adjust your chair (immediate impact, cost: €0)
This is solution #1 before any equipment investment. A well-adjusted chair transforms the experience, even on an entry-level model.
See our workstation setup guide for precise steps.
Key points:
- Lumbar support positioned in the curve of your lower back
- Feet flat on the floor, knees at 90°
- Shoulders relaxed (armrests at the right height)
- Screen at eye level
2. Alternate sitting/standing (high impact, cost: €350-600)
A standing desk lets you alternate postures every 45-60 minutes. Studies show a 32-54% reduction in lower back pain among regular users.
Recommended protocol:
- 45 min sitting → 15 min standing
- Gradual if you're not used to standing
See our comparison of the best standing desks.
3. Change your chair (high impact if chair is unsuitable)
If your chair has no adjustable lumbar support, or if it's over 8-10 years old, a new ergonomic chair is often the most effective solution.
See our comparison of ergonomic chairs for back pain.
📏 If you're over 1.85 m tall. Standard chairs don't suit tall builds. Our guide for tall people details the specific criteria.
4. Daily exercises (high impact, cost: €0)
The hourly reset:
- Stand up from your chair
- Place your hands on your lower back
- Lean back slightly for 10 seconds
- Walk for 2 minutes
The psoas stretch (key muscle in sitting position):
💡 Lighting matters too. Poor lighting forces you to lean forward or squint. See our LED desk lighting guide.
- Kneeling, one knee on the floor, the other foot forward at 90°
- Gently advance your pelvis until you feel the stretch in the back hip
- Hold 30 seconds on each side
Simple plank: 30 seconds of plank per day strengthens the deep back muscles and reduces chronic pain more effectively than painkillers according to several studies.
Useful Accessories
Footrest (~€30-60)
If your feet don't comfortably touch the floor once your chair is adjusted to the right height, a footrest restores correct posture.
Lumbar cushion (~€20-50)
Emergency solution for a chair without lumbar support. Less effective than a real ergonomic chair but much better than nothing.
Monitor stand (~€20-80)
If your screen is too low (placed directly on the desk), a stand brings it to eye level — immediately eliminating cervical tension caused by forward head posture.
When to See a Professional
See a doctor or physiotherapist if:
- Pain persists for more than 6 weeks despite adjustments
- You feel radiating pain in your legs (sciatica)
- Pain is worse in the morning (may indicate an inflammatory condition)
- You have tingling or loss of sensation
